Description:

Alcoholism is a treatable illness brought on by harmful dependence upon alcohol, which is physically and psychologically addictive. As a disease, alcoholism is primary and chronic, with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing alcoholism development and manifestations. The disease of alcohol addiction is progressive and fatal.

Symptoms / Consequences:

  • Odor on the breath
  • Intoxication
  • Difficulty focusing; glazed eyes
  • Uncharacteristic passive or aggressive behavior
  • Gradual deterioration in personal appearance and hygiene
  • Gradual deterioration in school work or job performance
  • Absenteeism, especially on Mondays
  • Alcohol becomes the focus of activities
  • Irritability
  • Flushed skin
  • Blackouts (loss of memory)
  • Trouble with personal relationships
